Test run of narrative images

In a group of four we had to come up with a idea for a image that has a narrative and tells a story. Our idea was boyfriend and girlfriend are meeting up, the boy has bought his girlfriend flowers however she found out that he's been cheating on her. So she has a bigger surprise she has a knife that already has blood on. This implies that she's already killed someone, the person he's been cheating with maybe...

However the image didn't work out as planned, it doesn't look real it doesn't look like this is how you'd meet up with your partner. We were also going to photoshop flowers and the knife into the image.

Annie Leibovitz

Annie Leibovitz (born October 2nd 1949) is an American photographer known for her dramatic, quirky and iconic portraits of many celebrities.  Her father was in the military and her mother was a dancer, they lived in the Philippines in 1967, Leibovitz enrolled in the San Francisco Art Institute wanting to become a painter. After taking a night class in photography she fell in love with it. In 1970 while she was still a student she was given her first commercial assignment for Rolling Stone magazine: to photograph John Lennon.

Gregory Crewdson's work has always amazed me, I think its because its very surreal and the way he works.











These images are by Gregory Crewdson, his photographs are normally in small towns in America. They are very dramatic, cinematic and eye catching. They sometimes feature disturbing and surreal events, to achieve these fascinating results he uses a large crew and they are often elaborately staged and lit.

Here you can see the very large crew that is involved in creating one of his images.

When talking about narratives there are some big differences between text and imagery, some of these being:

• When looking at an image you can interpret things differently to others, some of this can be because you've had different life experiences than other people so what we've done, read, seen etc can make you think or feel something else.
• With text you are mainly being told what to see in your imagination by the author, however our experiences can play a part in this as well as we associate words with different emotions.
• Text can be a lot easier to understand what the person was trying to get across because of the use of words whereas in a image you are left to work things out for yourself a lot of the time.
